Mutual suspicion, not ‘third party’, the real threat to BN-PN pact, says analyst

Analyst Ahmad Zaharuddin Sani Ahmad Sabri contends that the real threat to the collaboration between Barisan Nasional (BN) and Perikatan Nasional (PN) is mutual suspicion, rather than the presence of a "third party." While BN benefits from PN's electoral strength, Umno may question whether the cooperation has empowered a force capable of replacing it.

Both parties face a dilemma: cooperating too closely with the other could strengthen their electoral prospects, but it might also dilute the unique identity that drew voters to PN in the first place.

Zaharuddin's remarks follow Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki's warning that any party wanting to work with Umno must be cautious about being swayed by third parties. Asyraf pointed to the failed Muafakat Nasional pact between Umno and PAS, attributing its downfall to interference from another party like Bersatu.

Zaharuddin emphasized that "strong" alliances should not be endangered by other political players, pointing out that BN's vulnerability lies in its perception of PN's diminished status, while PN fears Umno's enduring political brand, organizational structure, and decades of institutional memory. The analyst contends that each side relies on the other, but neither wants the other to become too powerful.

Political commentator Wong Chin Huat added that Wawasan, a new political entity, poses a direct challenge to Umno, as Umno views it as a likely successor to Bersatu. Wawasan shares ideological similarities with Umno, making it a formidable competitor. Moreover, Malaysian parties are vying for the same voter base, leading to heightened competition and mutual distrust.

They often rally voters through cultural war symbols and must adopt distinct narratives to maintain Malay unity, but the presence of multiple parties creates a tendency for some to form alliances against others.
