Africa: Africa's 2026 Sustainable Development Report Sets Priorities to Fast-Track Progress to 2030

The 2026 Africa Sustainable Development Report (ASDR 2026) has been released, setting priorities to fast-track progress towards the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the African Union's Agenda 2063. African leaders, development partners, and experts gathered in New York to present the report, which is a joint effort by the African Union Commission, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, the African Development Bank, and the United Nations Development Programme.

The report focuses on five priority SDGs (6, 7, 9, 11, and 17) that are crucial for structural transformation, climate resilience, and inclusive growth. While Africa has made measurable gains, progress remains uneven and below the required pace to meet the 2030 targets. The report identifies financing constraints, climate shocks, rising debt vulnerabilities, and institutional capacity gaps as key challenges slowing down implementation.

It calls for scaled-up investment, stronger systems, and more coordinated action to accelerate progress. Deputy Secretary General Amina Mohammed emphasized the need for fragmented implementation, stronger financing, and institutional capacity. African Union Commission Deputy Chairperson Ambassador Selma Malika Haddadi stressed that Agenda 2063 and the 2030 Agenda are one shared roadmap towards a prosperous, inclusive, and sustainable Africa.

The report underscores the importance of investing in Africa's people, innovation, and natural wealth, with a focus on accelerating progress in areas such as clean energy access, infrastructure, sustainable cities, regional integration, and data and implementation capacity.
