Celestial events to light up UAE skies on Wednesday

Three celestial events will illuminate the UAE skies on Wednesday, captivating astronomy enthusiasts with a cosmic spectacle. The highlight of the week will be the peak of the Perseid meteor shower, coinciding with the alignment of six planets and a total solar eclipse. In the early hours, Mercury, Jupiter, Mars, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune will align in the sky.

Later, a total solar eclipse will be visible in Greenland, Iceland, and Spain, with a partial eclipse observable from Europe and parts of North Africa, though not from the UAE. The Perseid shower, at its peak, could produce up to 100 meteors per hour under clear skies. The event coincides with a new moon, enhancing the visibility of the meteors.

Sheeraz Awan, general manager and astronomer at Dubai Astronomy Group, encourages people to appreciate the "amazing universe we are all part of" by observing the night sky in the desert, a place where the sky appears as it naturally should. The group is organizing a special event in Al Khatim Desert, offering telescopes and explanations of the phenomena.

Despite the demand, no equipment is necessary for optimal viewing of the meteor shower. Experts recommend spending time lying down and gazing upwards to witness the meteors streaking across the night. The best viewing period is from midnight to dawn, ideally in areas with minimal light pollution. Stargazers are advised to visit locations such as Al Qaa, the Milky Way Spot, Al Khatim, and Mleiha National Park for the most vivid experience.
