HKFP Reader Survey 2026 results

The Hong Kong Free Press (HKFP) recently conducted its 2026 Reader Survey, receiving 122 responses from readers. These responses will be used to guide HKFP's news coverage and allocate its limited resources. The survey results indicate that most respondents perceive HKFP's reporting as impartial, with 77.8% giving the outlet a rating of eight or higher, with ten being the highest possible score.

Over the past eight years, HKFP's reader surveys have shown a general increase in satisfaction with the outlet's performance. In 2018, 82.1% of readers felt the outlet provided sufficient context for the news, while this figure increased to 86.7% in 2024 and 91.4% in the latest survey. The focus of HKFP's content remains a point of agreement among respondents, with many hoping for further investment in original reporting. However, the majority are content with the balance of HKFP's daily reporting and features.

Donors who have supported HKFP directly cite concerns for press freedom in Hong Kong as the primary reason for their support. Concerns over the state of the English-language news landscape and a desire to support original reporting are also significant factors. Survey respondents favor HKFP's content over other outlets, with the South China Morning Post (SCMP) being the most trusted source. In contrast, China Daily received the least favor among respondents.
