HKFP Reader Survey 2026 results

The 2026 Reader Survey conducted by HKFP reached 122 respondents, with the feedback used to guide news coverage and resource allocation. HKFP aspires to maintain impartiality, as it is a member of the Trust Project and Journalism Trust Initiative. Most respondents rated HKFP's reporting as fair, balanced, and impartial, with 77.8% giving it a score of eight or higher.

Over the past eight years, HKFP has seen a positive trend in readers' perceptions. In 2018, 82.1% of readers felt the outlet successfully contextualized news stories, compared to 86.7% in 2024 and 91.4% in the latest survey.

Although respondents desire increased investment in original reporting, they remain satisfied with HKFP's balance of daily reporting and features. The primary reason for supporting HKFP is concern for press freedom in Hong Kong, followed by a desire to support the outlet amidst the challenging state of the English-language news landscape. Donation support also plays a role in driving subscriptions.

Donors surveyed expressed a desire for HKFP to revive its podcast, which is ranked second only to the South China Morning Post (SCMP) in terms of reader reliance. China Daily, being state-backed, was the least favored news outlet among respondents.
