Anwar says Perikatan neglecting Tabung Haji depositors after MPs walk out of RCI debate

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim criticized the opposition for attempting to distract from issues surrounding the Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) during a special session in the Dewan Rakyat, accusing them of making him a target rather than addressing the betrayal of TH depositors. He urged the opposition to focus on the "betrayal of Tabung Haji" instead of debating whether to discuss him or the institution.

Several opposition MPs walked out of the session, refusing to participate due to Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul's decision to proceed with the briefing in his absence, without a proposal from PN's chief whip to postpone the meeting. Anwar, who was undergoing physiotherapy after a laparoscopic hernia repair surgery, had already apologized for his absence.

The special session aimed to hear the Minister's briefing on the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report on TH and discuss measures to improve its financial standing. The 211-page report, released on July 29, identified weaknesses in TH's management and operations from 2014 to 2020 and recommended 25 improvements, 75% of which were implemented by July 30.

The RCI was established in 2021 and presented its report to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on August 30, 2022.
