Anwar says Perikatan neglecting Tabung Haji depositors after MPs walk out of RCI debate

Malaysia's Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim criticized the opposition, accusing them of diverting attention from Tabung Haji (TH) issues and making him the subject of political drama. He urged the focus to be on those he called "betrayers" of TH and its depositors, instead of debating about himself. Anwar claimed Malay Muslims had been betrayed, questioning the opposition's motives when they come from those who champion Malay and Muslim causes.

The opposition's dissatisfaction with the Dewan Rakyat Speaker's decision to proceed with the briefing in the absence of the Prime Minister led several opposition MPs to walk out of the special sitting. The sitting aimed to discuss the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report on TH and measures to restore the institution's financial position.

The 211-page RCI report, released on July 29, detailed weaknesses in TH's management and operations between 2014 and 2020, and recommended 25 improvements, of which 75% had been implemented by July 30. The government established the RCI in 2021, appointing its members on January 20, 2022. The RCI presented its report to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on August 30, 2022.
