Telangana has 36 govt medical colleges, but only four make it to national IIRF 2026 top institutions

Telangana boasts 36 government medical colleges, each offering over 4,400 MBBS seats, yet only four have earned a spot among the top 144 government medical institutions in the country according to the latest International Institutional Ranking Framework (IIRF) 2026 rankings. Gandhi Medical College in Secunderabad topped the list for government medical colleges in Telangana, ranking 43rd.

Osmania Medical College in Hyderabad and Kakatiya Medical College in Warangal followed, ranking 52nd and 60th respectively. However, the state's newest government medical colleges, established as part of its recent expansion, do not make the cut. In contrast, private medical colleges in Telangana perform better. Out of 187 private medical colleges included in the IIRF list, 18 from Telangana made the rankings.

CMC Vellore topped the private medical colleges category, followed by institutions such as Malla Reddy Institute of Dental Sciences in Hyderabad and Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences in New Delhi. The IIRF rankings consider a variety of parameters beyond just academic performance, including research outcomes, graduate employability, institutional development, stakeholder perception, and broader impact.
