Tax Ombud Reiterates Commitment to Promoting Fairness, Transparency Within Nigeria’s Tax System

Dr. John Nwabueze, the Chief Executive of the Office of the Tax Ombud in Nigeria, has emphasized the organization's dedication to fairness and transparency in the country's tax system. During a recent meeting with business editors in Lagos, Nwabueze discussed the Office's accomplishments and future goals.

Nwabueze highlighted the Office's significant advancements in recent months, including the introduction of a digital complaints portal, a case management system, a toll-free call center, and SMS callback services. These innovations have made it more convenient for individuals and businesses to file complaints and receive prompt resolutions.

He reported that within a three-month period, the Office received over 20 genuine complaints, primarily from state revenue services. Of these complaints, eight were successfully resolved within the statutory 14-day period, with an additional seven days provided where necessary.

The Tax Ombud is also expanding its team of skilled accountants and legal experts to better address complex tax matters, such as disputes involving digital asset taxation. Additionally, the Office is working to improve accessibility in rural areas by planning to establish offices in all six geopolitical zones across Nigeria. The organization has also increased its collaboration with professional groups, the media, revenue authorities, and other stakeholders, as well as planning a nationwide public awareness campaign to tackle persistent issues like multiple taxation.

Addressing systemic problems, Nwabueze emphasized the importance of tackling multiple taxation, particularly at the state and local government levels. He praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for establishing an independent tax ombudsman institution to encourage voluntary tax compliance and build trust in Nigeria's tax administration.

Nwabueze stated that the Office is committed to working with various stakeholders, including the Joint Revenue Board, state governments, and local authorities, to find sustainable solutions for multiple taxation.
