Nigerian army says it safely rescued 33 people kidnapped by gunmen

Nigeria's military rescued 33 individuals who were kidnapped by armed men while traveling through the country's northwestern Zamfara state. The armed forces collaborated with local police immediately after learning of the abduction in the Tsafe area of Zamfara on Saturday afternoon. The army located the kidnappers as they were attempting to relocate the hostages to an undisclosed destination, and the gunmen dispersed into the surrounding woods following a firefight.

Kidnappings by armed groups who demand ransoms are frequent in certain regions of northwestern Nigeria, with major highways frequently becoming targets of assaults. Analysts attribute the increase in abductions to ransom payments from distressed families, intermediaries, or occasionally Nigerian authorities. Lt-Col Aliyu Danja, a spokesman for the Nigerian army, stated that the location where the abductors were transporting their captives when the troops intervened remained unknown.

Danja added that the military is currently working to trace the kidnappers. "The troops engaged the terrorists using effective fire, compelling them to abandon the victims and flee into adjacent forests," he explained, noting that all the hostages were recovered without any harm. Danja cautioned residents in the region to remain alert and provide pertinent information to security forces.

Nigeria's security forces have recently recorded a number of successful rescues of kidnapped victims. On Thursday, the country's presidency announced that over 300 people abducted in separate incidents across Nigeria had been rescued, including 163 victims taken during an attack in February on the Woro and Nuku communities in Kwara state, where many were killed.

At least 145 others had been taken in Niger state. This rescue occurred weeks after 44 pupils and teachers were released after being held captive for over 50 days in a school raid in Oyo state. President Bola Tinubu announced on Wednesday that soldiers would receive a pay raise of up to 80% as a gesture of appreciation for their efforts in combating Nigeria's significant security challenges.

Tinubu aims to reduce widespread banditry, kidnappings, and violence perpetrated by various armed groups, including Islamist militants. The ongoing insecurity across the country has emerged as a major political issue leading up to the 2027 elections.
