잇단 대형 수주…HD현대중 힘센엔진, 미 AI 데이터센터로

A maritime HD-modern industrial company's unique engine is expanding its reach to U.S. artificial intelligence (AI) data centers, supplying power. Following a larger contract last April, the data center power generation business has become a new area for engine sales. HD Modern Industrial announced on the 10th that it had signed a 95.6 billion USD supply contract with Confenergy Group for power generation equipment.

This contract is the largest among all engine supply contracts HD Modern Industrial has secured so far, being about 1.5 times larger than the 62.71 billion USD power generation equipment contract it signed with U.S. energy infrastructure and engineering firm AEG in April. The total capacity of the power generation equipment HD Modern Industrial is supplying amounts to 1000 megawatts (MW), which will be used to provide power to U.S. data centers.

The engines in this power generation equipment are fitted with HD Modern Industrial's in-house developed HiMSEN engine. This engine has been used for propulsion, power generation on ships, and for power generation in onshore power plants. The engines supplied in this contract are large mid-range engines with high output and high efficiency, capable of 24-hour operation, making them suitable for stable power supply to data centers.

HD Modern Industrial explained that the engines' high-performance and high-efficiency capabilities make them ideal for data centers needing constant power. As AI services and cloud infrastructure expand, the power consumption of U.S. data centers is expected to rapidly increase. According to the U.S. Power Research Institute (EPRI), the share of data centers in total U.S. power consumption is expected to rise from around 4~5% in 2024 to 9~17% by 2030.

HD Modern Industrial is leveraging the capabilities of its affiliated companies to enter the data center power market. HD Modern Korea Shipyard's underwater data center core technology development team and HD Modern Electric's distribution and power equipment supply division, as well as HD Modern Marine Solutions' expansion of power generation engine maintenance and repair operations, are all contributing to the expansion of the company's power generation equipment business.

An HD Modern Industrial spokesperson said, "The growing inquiries for power generation engines in the data center market confirms the technology and reliability of the HiMSEN engine." They added, "We will broaden our stake in the power generation equipment market by pursuing various business opportunities."
