GPS ready for Sarawak polls regardless of redelineation outcome, says Abang Jo

KUCHING, Aug 10 — The Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) is prepared to participate in the state election with either the original number of parliamentary seats or a higher number if the proposed redelineation exercise takes place, according to its chairman, Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. The quantity of seats up for grabs would not pose a problem, the Sarawak Chief Minister affirmed.

“We have no concerns. Whether it's 82 seats or 99 seats, we are prepared,” he stated during the inauguration of the Regency Specialist Hospital Kuching project in the state capital today. The primary focus, he emphasized, was ensuring the election proceeds as scheduled and on time, unencumbered by the redelineation outcome. In July 2024, the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly approved the State Legislative Assembly (Composition of Membership) Bill 2025, which added 17 new seats, raising the total to 99.

The Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, reportedly instructed the Election Commission (EC) to produce an updated report on the redelineation exercise to expand the number of state seats. The matter was discussed at a recent Cabinet meeting, with the Prime Minister pledging his support for its implementation. The term of the Sarawak state government concludes in February 2027.
