Consumo retira seis modelos de gafas para el eclipse por riesgo de lesiones oculares

The autonomous communities' Consumer authorities have ordered the withdrawal of six eclipse glasses models due to potential eye injury risks, the FACUA-Consumidores organization reported on Monday. These models belong to the brands Lionstar, ECP Eye Care Proffesional, Pelispan, Homanaje, Orro and Opticalia. Their irregularities were detected by the consumption authorities of Madrid, Castilla y León, Galicia, La Rioja and Aragon.

The organization warned that these irregularities may be present in other products currently being marketed or given away. All six models have been flagged by the Consumer authorities as presenting a danger to users. When worn for eclipse viewing, the excessively dark filter can cause users to lose sight of the solar disk and inadvertently move or remove the glasses, exposing their eyes to direct solar radiation during the brief unprotected period.

This direct exposure can cause chemical or thermal injury to the foveal cells in the retina. The Lionstar LSP1 model was added to the consumer alert network on August 5 by Madrid's General Directorate of Trade, Consumption and Services, prohibiting its sale and immobilizing existing units. ECP Eye Care Proffesional glasses were included in Castilla y León's alert network on August 3, mandating their withdrawal from the market and prohibiting further sales.

Pelispan glasses were included in Galicia's alert network on July 29, and Homanaje QW-50Z1 glasses were added on the same day by the Galician Consumer Institute. Orro O37-R model glasses, with a manufacturing date of March 2026, were included in La Rioja's alert network on July 30, and Opticalia O37-R model glasses were added to Aragon's alert network on July 31.
