As Merdeka and Malaysia Day near, BN must put Malaysia first in Melaka: Here’s how — Phar Kim Beng

The upcoming state election in Melaka provides an opportunity for Barisan Nasional (BN) to demonstrate that political cooperation transcends communal boundaries, according to Phar Kim Beng. As Malaysia approaches its national holidays of Merdeka Day and Malaysia Day, BN should put Malaysia first in Melaka. Zahid Hamidi, BN chairman, has authorized Ab Rauf Yusoh, the Melaka BN chairman, to negotiate with other coalitions.

Rather than focusing solely on seat allocation, the larger question is what kind of Malaysia BN wants those negotiations to produce. BN's history of successful coalition building, involving multiple ethnic and religious constituencies, highlights the importance of such negotiations. A negotiation between BN and PH in Melaka would show that political cooperation can coexist with diverse differences.

It would also emphasize that state politics can maintain autonomy from national ideological pressures.
