Amit Shah to make statement on Delhi protest crackdown, Opposition must not disrupt: Government

The government has agreed to the Opposition's demand that Union Home Minister Amit Shah make a statement in Parliament regarding the alleged excessive use of force against protesters in Delhi during the anti-paper leak demonstrations last month. The only condition attached to the government's offer is that the Opposition must not disrupt Shah's speech.

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has reiterated his demand for Shah to clarify "who ordered the firing on students." Gandhi accused the government of making "fantasy conversations" and questioned the Opposition's commitment to dialogue. Union Health Minister J P Nadda, who was part of talks with the Congress to end the protest, criticized Gandhi for being interested in "anarchy" rather than constructive dialogue.

Rajya Sabha Chairman and Vice-President C P Radhakrishnan had earlier directed Rijiju, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister, to "echo the sentiments of the Opposition" and consider the request for Shah's presence in the House.
