Global EITI Assessors Arrive Nigeria for 2026 Validation Exercise

The Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) assessors have arrived in Nigeria to conduct the 2026 validation exercise, marking a crucial stage in the country's commitment to transparency and accountability in the governance of its extractive industries. The announcement was made by NEITI spokesperson, Obiageli Onuorah, confirming the commencement of the mission on August 10, 2026.

During the mission's tenure, the assessors will conduct a thorough quality assurance assessment and engage with various stakeholders, including government institutions, the National Assembly, extractive companies, civil society organizations, development partners, anti-corruption agencies, host communities, the media, and other relevant stakeholders. These consultations aim to gather diverse perspectives on Nigeria's implementation of the EITI standard and ongoing reforms in the extractive sector.

Executive Secretary of NEITI, Musa Adar, expressed the nation's dedication to transparency and accountability within the extractive industries. He emphasized that the validation process serves as an opportunity to showcase Nigeria's progress and highlight areas where further reforms can enhance governance in the sector. Adar also highlighted the extensive preparations undertaken by NEITI in collaboration with the National Stakeholders' Working Group (NSWG) and other stakeholders, such as submitting the validation documentation and engaging stakeholders in accordance with the 2023 EITI Standard.

Nigeria underwent its fourth validation exercise under the 2019 EITI Standard in January 2023, resulting in a moderate overall score of 72 points for its efforts in EITI implementation.
