Wildfire forces more than 20,000 people evacuate homes in western Canada

A fast-moving wildfire in British Columbia, Canada, has forced over 20,000 people to evacuate their homes, prompting the province to declare a state of emergency. The Bald Range wildfire, which has doubled in size overnight, is now burning out of control and covers approximately 9,510 hectares. Located in the province's southern interior, the affected region is home to Summerland and Peachland, two districts known for their significant wine production.

Premier David Eby described the fire as "a bomb going off," citing towering flames and a weather system that creates its own lightning, which feeds on itself. Some residents were trapped and required rescue efforts. The state of emergency grants the provincial government control over travel restrictions, supply protections, and other resources to coordinate rescue work.

Over 1,500 firefighters from various countries are battling more than 100 fires across Canada, with the Bald Range wildfire alone claiming over 20,000 evacuations this summer. The incident follows a persistent heatwave across western Europe, which has led to more destructive wildfires in countries like France and Spain. Scientists warn that extreme weather events like these are becoming more frequent and intense due to climate change.
