Over 20,000 evacuated as wildfire spreads in western Canada

Over twenty thousand individuals were compelled to evacuate their homes as a rapidly advancing wildfire approached communities in British Columbia’s Okanagan Lake region. Canadian officials issued evacuation orders for the entirety of Summerland, a town with a population of approximately twelve thousand residents, alongside roughly eight thousand people in Peachland and its surrounding areas.

The extent of property damage caused by the fire remains unspecified by authorities. The Bald Range wildfire ignited on the evening of the preceding day and swiftly expanded, consuming nearly five thousand hectares of land and advancing roughly fifteen kilometers towards Summerland. Local authorities declared a state of emergency in the region.

An official from the Okanagan-Similkameen emergency management department characterized the blaze as one of the fastest-growing wildfires the area has ever encountered.
