A fast-moving wildfire forces more than 20,000 people to evacuate in western Canada

A massive wildfire in British Columbia, Canada forced more than 20,000 residents to evacuate their homes in the early hours of the morning. The fast-moving blaze grew rapidly, threatening towns along the shores of Okanagan Lake. The entire community of Summerland, with a population of about 12,000, was ordered to evacuate, along with around 8,000 people in and around the nearby town of Peachland.

The exact number of homes destroyed remains unknown. The Bald Range wildfire, first reported on Friday evening, expanded to approximately 50 square kilometers (19 square miles) within the next few hours. The rapid growth overwhelmed smaller communities such as Faulder and extended the fire's reach to Summerland over a distance of about 15 kilometers (9 miles).

Erick Thompson, an emergency official with the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen, described the wildfire as one of the "quickest-moving, fastest-growing" the region had ever encountered. Thompson had to abandon the emergency operations center to ensure his family's safety and subsequently evacuated them. Social media videos showed multiple homes engulfed in flames as residents rushed to evacuate, with flames visible on both sides of the roads.

The intense wildfire season in Canada has led to numerous mass evacuations and has resulted in smoke plumes spreading across vast areas of the country and the United States.
