Pope calls for humanitarian corridors in Sudan

Vatican City: Pope Leo XIV issued a call on Sunday for humanitarian corridors to be established for civilians affected by the ongoing conflict in Sudan, which has resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands and the displacement of millions. The Pope expressed deep concern over the tragic situation in Sudan, particularly in the city of El-Obeid, the largest city in the southern Kordofan region, which has been under intense drone attacks in recent weeks. These attacks have prompted the UN to issue a red alert, warning of an unfolding catastrophe.

In his Angelus prayer, Pope Leo XIV reaffirmed his spiritual closeness to the people of Sudan and renewed his appeal to those in authority to ensure the creation of humanitarian corridors for the civilian population. He also urged the international community to support efforts aimed at achieving an immediate ceasefire. The Pope prayed for the Lord to sustain those suffering, to convert the hearts of those engaged in violence, and to grant the long-awaited peace.

The war between Sudan's regular army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) began in April 2023, leading to the UN describing the crisis as the world's largest displacement and hunger crisis.
