Pope calls for humanitarian corridors in Sudan

Vatican City: Pope Leo XIV has called for humanitarian corridors to be established for civilians impacted by the ongoing conflict in Sudan, which has resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands and the displacement of millions. The Pope expressed his deep concern for the tragic situation in Sudan, particularly in the city of El-Obeid, the largest city in the southern Kordofan region.

This area has been subjected to intense drone attacks in recent weeks, prompting the UN to issue a red alert regarding the unfolding catastrophe.

In his Angelus prayer, Pope Leo reaffirmed his spiritual connection with the people of Sudan and renewed his appeal to those in authority to ensure the creation of humanitarian corridors for the civilian population. He also urged the international community to support efforts aimed at achieving an immediate ceasefire. The Pope prayed for the Lord to sustain those who are suffering, to convert the hearts of those who engage in violence, and to grant the long-awaited peace.

The war between Sudan's regular army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) began in April 2023, leading to what the UN characterizes as the world's largest displacement and hunger crises.
