Kuria says Ruto can win re-election without Mt Kenya votes

Former Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has made a bold assertion that President William Ruto can win re-election in 2027 even without the crucial support of the Mt Kenya region. In an interview on August 9, 2026, Kuria stated that a mere 13% vote share from Mt Kenya would still constitute a significant victory for Ruto, representing more than enough to secure his reelection.

"If the president gets 13% of the vote in Mt. Kenya, that would be a very big win for him. It would be a bonus, more than he needs," Kuria proclaimed. "In my projection, the President is going to be reelected even without a single vote from Mt Kenya region. Figures don’t lie."

Kuria's comments come at a time when Mt Kenya is experiencing heightened political tensions. Alliances have formed between some local leaders, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who have accused the current Kenya Kwanza administration of neglecting the region. Kuria, however, dismissed the stability of the opposition coalition, labeling it as "built on sand; it is fickle." He argued that only the people of Mt Kenya genuinely oppose Ruto, while others are merely opportunistic.

The remarks from Kuria are expected to fuel discussions about the strength of the anti-Ruto movement and the pivotal role Mt Kenya plays in the upcoming 2027 General Election. Regarding the deputy president position for the next election, Kuria emphasized that Ruto should have the complete freedom to choose his running mate without any pressure from regional leaders.

"I will support anyone whom the president picks as his running mate. You cannot force a running mate on the president. He should be given absolute freedom to pick whoever he wants," Kuria stated, seemingly endorsing Ruto's autonomy in this critical decision-making process.
