Iran to release new images of Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei after undated video: State media

Iran is set to unveil fresh visuals of Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, according to state-run media, as months of rumors about his health and conspicuous absence from public life have swirled. The Mizan news agency, citing Basij Organisation deputy Qasem Qoraishi, disclosed that images of Khamenei "engaged with ordinary citizens and in the streets" would be released in the years ahead, along with footage of him meeting armed forces commanders.

The announcement arrives a day after Iran's semi-official Mehr News Agency unveiled a 12-second video of Khamenei conversing with several officials and advisers. The clip, which showed the Supreme Leader seated on a carpet and imparting a religious lesson, did not specify the recording date or location, leaving its current condition unverifiable.

Khamenei, 56, assumed the role of Supreme Leader in March following his father and predecessor, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who perished in US-Israeli strikes during the Iran war. Additionally, Iranian state media reported that Khamenei convened with President Masoud Pezeshkian as the latter marked his third year in office. They reportedly discussed Iran's economic and military affairs, including concerns over the populace's cost-of-living, the war, military developments, and the handling of currency and energy expenditure.

The limited visibility of Khamenei has intensified conjectures about his health and whereabouts. CNN previously cited sources familiar with his election, stating that Khamenei had sustained a fractured foot and minor facial injuries during the initial day of the US-Israeli bombing campaign. Opposition-linked Iranian outlets and some Israeli media have also advanced assertions about his health and rumored hospitalization; however, these claims have not been independently corroborated.

Israeli Channel 14 has alleged that Khamenei remains in critical condition, yet has offered no independently verified proof to substantiate the claim. The latest video is not the sole undated footage disseminated since Khamenei ascended to the position of Supreme Leader. Iran's state broadcaster IRIB had previously posted a video depicting him instructing a religious class, yet it failed to provide any details regarding the filming date or location.

The absence of substantiated, recent public appearances has perpetuated inquiries about his health. Iranian President Pezeshkian asserted this week that communication with Khamenei had been "extremely challenging" but that he had managed to meet the Supreme Leader, describing their discussions as constructive. The recent reports from Iranian state media portraying Khamenei interacting with officials and deliberating on military and economic matters seem intended to convey that he continues to actively govern the nation.

However, the timing of the newly released footage and the breadth of his current public engagement remain ambiguous.
