Helicopter crash kills pilot and crew member amid Utah wildfire battle

Two helicopter pilots, contractors for the US Forest Service, lost their lives when their Sikorsky Skycrane helicopter crashed while battling a wildfire in the Fishlake National Forest, officials announced on Saturday. The accident occurred on Friday morning. The crash sparked a new fire that merged with the ongoing one, consuming approximately 174 square miles of land, nearly doubling the affected area to 451 square kilometers.

Officials initially struggled to reach the crash site due to the active fire. However, on Saturday, crews were able to enter the area and confirm the fatalities, according to the Sevier County Sheriff and Coroner. The fire, known as Widemouth 2, has burned over 114,600 acres and is now 24% contained. This marked a significant increase from early Friday, when the fire's extent was reported at over 105,000 acres.

The crash site lies within the fire's perimeter, prompting the US Forest Service to declare that ground resources could not safely respond immediately. The Incident Management Team decided to postpone any rescue efforts until the area was deemed safe. Federal authorities have advised the public against speculating on the cause of the crash, as search-and-rescue teams await more favorable fire conditions.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has dispatched investigators to the site, located roughly 160 miles south of Salt Lake City. They will document the scene and retrieve the aircraft, a process that may take a year or more to determine the cause. Wildfire incidents have been particularly deadly in the western US states; in June, three firefighters perished while combating a blaze along the Colorado-Utah border, and another firefighter succumbed to burn injuries from the emergency response.
