Helicopter crash kills pilot and crew member amid Utah wildfire battle

Two crew members, including a pilot, were killed when their firefighting helicopter crashed during efforts to battle an extensive wildfire in central Utah. The incident occurred on Friday, near Richfield, in the Three Creeks Reservoir area. The helicopter, a Sikorsky S-64 'Skycrane' operated by Helicopter Transport Services for the United States Forest Service, came down around 10 am local time, about 16:00 GMT.

The National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) confirmed the fatalities on Saturday, more than 24 hours after the crash. Rescue teams were hampered by extreme fire conditions and steep terrain, delaying their response. Rescue crews have since recovered the bodies, though the deceased's identities remain undisclosed. Due to the crash, evacuations were issued for nearby residents, and road closures were enforced.

Deputy incident commander Tyler Hecht stated that the firefighting operation would continue as normal, emphasizing the dangerous nature of the work. Utah Governor Spencer Cox described wildland firefighting as one of the most perilous vocations and encouraged prayers for the fallen crew. The Widemouth 2 fire, which began as a lightning strike in Fishlake National Forest on July 27, has burned over 111,000 acres, making it the state's largest wildfire this year.

Currently, containment stands at 24 percent, with extreme fire behavior posing continued threats to nearby communities. This is only the second fatal wildfire incident in Utah this summer; three firefighters perished in June while combating the Knowles and Gore fires near the Colorado border, with a fourth firefighter succumbing to injuries later.
