‘Chor, dakat rani’ barbs, shoes and mud hurled at Mamata Banerjee’s car

Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee encountered a protest on Sunday while en route to visit the family of a Trinamool Congress (TMC) worker who passed away in police custody during her visit to Halisahar, situated in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district. The TMC chief was met by a crowd that hurled insults, including "chor" (thief) and "dakat rani" (dacoit queen), along with mud and slippers at her car.

The BJP condemned the incident, asserting that they do not condone violence. However, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari defended the police and accused Banerjee of attempting to influence events through politics. He defended the police's actions, stating that they had carried out their responsibilities. The police initiated an investigation into the police custody death of the TMC worker.

Banerjee, visibly shaken, alleged that bricks, stones, shoes, and mud were thrown at her convoy, and that the police had failed to intervene, potentially leading to fatal injuries if her car windows were left open. She claimed that it was a "well-planned conspiracy" and expressed her loss of faith in the local police, alleging that senior administration figures were protecting criminal elements. The TMC chief demanded accountability and justice in the matter.
