Canada: British Columbia declares emergency as fires spread

Canadian officials declared a state of emergency in British Columbia on Saturday following the rapid spread of a fast-moving wildfire. Over 20,000 people were ordered to evacuate as the blaze intensified, with British Columbia Premier David Eby comparing the fire's intensity to a bomb going off. Flames soared to heights of 100 and 200 feet, and the fire reportedly generated its own weather system, producing lightning.

Homes and properties were destroyed, with some residents trapped and requiring rescue. The fire, first reported on Friday evening, rapidly grew overnight, prompting evacuation orders across the province. By Saturday, it had burned approximately 9,500 hectares, leading to the evacuation of all 12,000 residents in the Summerland district.

This fire is one of many challenging emergency crews across British Columbia, with the province experiencing 70 new wildfires in the past week. The Minister of Forests, Ravi Parmar, reported that 105 wildfires are currently burning in the province. Canada has seen 4 million hectares of forest scorched by wildfires in 2026, according to the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Center.

Wildfires have ignited in various regions, including Ontario and Quebec, this year as hot, dry conditions have fueled blazes in dense forest areas. Recent years have witnessed an increasing number of destructive wildfire seasons in Canada.
