British Columbia district declares state of emergency, issues evacuation orders as wildfire rages

Early Saturday, the district of Summerland in British Columbia declared a state of emergency and issued evacuation orders after a rapidly spreading wildfire ravaged the western Canadian region. The Bald Range wildfire had engulfed approximately 5,000 hectares by early Saturday, prompting evacuations in surrounding areas. Originating about 15 kilometers west of Summerland, the fire prompted the district to lose power and issue a boil water notice, as untreated water infiltrated the system due to the wildfire threat. With a population of around 12,000, Summerland experienced the impact of the crisis.

In recent years, Canada has faced numerous wildfires fueled by hot and dry weather conditions, particularly in forested areas. Other provinces, such as Ontario and Quebec, have also experienced severe blazes throughout the year. To combat these dangerous fires, Canada has received support from neighboring countries such as Mexico, Australia, France, and New Zealand. In British Columbia alone, about 1,500 firefighters are deployed across the province, and 39 evacuation orders and 49 alerts have been issued.

Premier David Eby assured the public that the province possesses sufficient resources and is prepared to deploy additional international and national firefighters and aircraft as needed. Currently, wildfires have scorched an extensive 3.9 million hectares in Canada this year, as reported by the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre.
