British Columbia Declares State Of Emergency, 20,000 Evacuated Amid Wildfire

On Saturday, the district of Summerland in British Columbia declared a state of emergency and issued evacuation orders as a rapidly spreading wildfire ravaged the western Canadian landscape. The Bald Range wildfire, which had grown to encompass approximately 5,000 hectares, was responsible for the evacuation in Summerland, situated about 45 kilometers from Kelowna. The blaze had originated roughly 15 kilometers west of the district, according to the BC Wildfire Service.

Power outages and a boil water notice ensued as the wildfire threatened the district's infrastructure. Summerland, home to a population of around 12,000, was experiencing the adverse effects of the fire, with untreated water seeping into the system after the water treatment plant was bypassed due to the looming danger.

Canada has been grappling with numerous wildfires this year, as hot and dry conditions have exacerbated the risk of new fires and the potential for lightning to reignite existing ones. BC has mobilized 1,500 firefighting personnel and issued 39 evacuation orders and 49 alerts to combat the conflagration.

Premier David Eby affirmed that the province was well-prepared, with additional national and international firefighters and aircraft on standby. Across the country, fires have ravaged 3.9 million hectares so far this year, according to the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre.
