2026 Commonwealth Fencing Championships begin in Lagos

The 2026 Commonwealth Federation Fencing Championships kick off in Lagos on Sunday, becoming the inaugural African host of the elite senior championships. Twenty nations, featuring Rugby School Nigeria, Victoria Island, Lagos, have gathered to host six days of world-class fencing competition. Commonwealth Fencing Federation President Marie-France Dufour praised Nigeria's preparations and athletes' enthusiasm, expressing confidence the event would boost fencing's popularity across the continent.

Nigeria Fencing Federation President Adeyinka Samuel described the tournament as historic and fulfilling a long-held dream. He noted the opportunity for Nigerian athletes to compete against the world's best and personally aspired to see a Nigerian qualify for the Olympic Games. Local Organising Committee member Olaitan Ogunbiyi praised the committee's dedication and predicted a smooth tournament.

Nigerian athletes, including second-highest ranked male fencer Folayemi Akinyosoye and leading female fencer Adebodunrin Thomas, expressed their determination to perform well and bring glory to their nation. The championship will feature athletes in senior, U-23, veteran, and wheelchair categories, with the debut of U-23 and wheelchair events in Lagos. The first day of competition will include men's and women's epee, foil, and sabre.
