2026 Commonwealth Fencing Championships begin in Lagos

Fencing's 2026 Commonwealth Federation Championships commence in Lagos, marking the event's first appearance on African soil. Twenty nations are in attendance with athletes from Rugby School Nigeria, Victoria Island, Lagos, set to showcase their skills in six days of fencing. Commonwealth Fencing Federation President Marie-France Dufour commended Nigeria's preparations and the athletes' enthusiasm, voicing confidence that the event would increase fencing's popularity in Africa.

Nigeria Fencing Federation President Adeyinka Samuel called it "historic" and a dream come true after staging multiple international competitions. Nigeria's athletes, including Folayemi Akinyosoye and Adebodunrin Thomas, expressed their excitement to compete against the world's best fencers. Over 20 countries, including England, South Africa, and Singapore, will compete in senior, U-23, veteran, and wheelchair categories, with the latter two debuting in Lagos.
