'Mum, don't call me': Inside Thailand's deadly school shooting

Nine individuals were killed and 23 others wounded in Thailand's deadliest mass shooting since 2022, as reported by Reuters. The incident unfolded on August 7 at Debsirin Nonthaburi School, situated on Bangkok's outskirts. A 14-year-old student opened fire, killing three teachers and two school officials before taking his own life.

The shooting's trigger was the alleged gunman's prior murder of his grandparents at home before departing for the school on a bus. Initially, 14-year-old Khim and her classmates sought refuge by barricading themselves in a classroom, communicating through group messages to avoid alerting the shooter. Despite the chaos, Khim reassured her mother not to call, fearing the ringtone might provide the shooter with a clue.

As the gunman moved through the school, students hid in class, while others attempted to flee. A nurse's daughter also received a distressing call about the shooting, prompting her to estimate the number of bullets used by the gunman. When the shooting concluded, families reunited at their home in suburban Bangkok, grateful for surviving the ordeal.
