Thailand school shooting toll rises to nine after death of 12-year-old girl

Thailand's school shooting toll has increased to nine following the death of a 12-year-old girl on Saturday, Aug 8, 2023. The girl succumbed to her critical wounds sustained in a shooting incident that occurred at Debsirin Nonthaburi School in Nonthaburi province, northwest of Bangkok, on Friday, Aug 7, 2023. The attacker, a 14-year-old boy, carried out the attack at the school before taking his own life.

He also allegedly killed his two grandparents at their family home earlier that morning. Currently, 14 people are hospitalized, with seven of them in critical condition. Most of the wounded are between the ages of 12 and 14. The school had issued a Facebook post seeking blood donations for two students, including the 12-year-old girl, who was in the seventh grade.

The victims include five school staff members, the shooter, and his grandparents. Their bodies were claimed by relatives and will be transported to their hometowns for funeral rites. The girl's body remains unclaimed. The small, compact gun used in the attack was legally registered to the boy's grandfather. The co-educational state school, with approximately 3,000 students aged 12 to 18, will suspend classes from Aug 10 to Aug 14.

The school's head, Wiroon Supasingsiripreecha, stated that most victims suffered a single fatal gunshot wound to a vital area, such as the chest or head. The gun found on the shooter was consistent with the weapon used in the attack.
