July 31 enrolment deadline triggers last-minute rush for crop insurance scheme

The July 31 enrolment deadline for crop insurance schemes has triggered a last-minute rush among farmers in Rayalaseema, particularly in the historically rain-dependent districts of Sri Sathya Sai, Chittoor, and Annamayya. Government officials have intensified their efforts to ensure maximum farmer coverage under the insurance program, especially considering the impact of the El Nino phenomenon on the region's agriculture.

Historically, the Rayalaseema region has faced challenges such as delayed monsoons, dry spells, and unseasonal rainfall, making crop insurance a crucial safety net for farmers. In Sri Sathya Sai district, an impressive 10,279 farmers have enrolled under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), safeguarding 15,950 hectares of farmland. The Restructured Weather-Based Crop Insurance Scheme (RWBCIS) has seen 78,798 farmers enrolled for coverage of 1,00,320 hectares.

Chittoor and Annamayya districts, which are major hubs for agriculture and horticulture, have a combined total of nearly 3.5 lakh farmers engaged in these activities. Horticulture crops like mango, tomato, banana, and other fruits and vegetables play a significant role in the regional economy. Officials emphasize that timely insurance coverage is vital for the livelihoods of farmers, providing them with financial security during uncertain weather conditions.

Sri Sathya Sai district collector A. Shyam Prasad highlighted the importance of crop insurance in regions reliant on seasonal rainfall, stating that even a brief adverse weather event can severely impact yields and farm incomes. As the deadline approaches, the rush to enroll in crop insurance schemes underscores the urgency and necessity of such safety measures in the face of unpredictable weather patterns.
