Teachers and pupils among eight killed in Thailand school shooting

Eight individuals, comprising teachers and pupils, lost their lives in a school shooting that took place at Debsirin Nonthaburi School in Thailand. The incident unfolded when a 14-year-old student, driven by mental anguish, opened fire before taking his own life. The outburst occurred on the outskirts of Bangkok, prompting a swift evacuation of students from the premises.

Injured victims were swiftly transported to ambulances for urgent medical attention, their cries of pain echoing in the aftermath of the tragedy. The police spokesman confirmed that the perpetrator was among the seven fatalities, while the injured count stood at 15. The attack commenced after the assailant allegedly executed his grandparents at their residence on Friday.

Upon entering the school, he unleashed a barrage of 26 rounds before discovering a cache of 34 additional rounds. One 18-year-old student recounted his initial confusion, mistaking the gunfire for firecrackers before the reality of the situation dawned upon him. The Thai Education Minister and Deputy Education Minister expressed their condolences and coordination of relief efforts.

This marks the second school shooting incident in Thailand this year, following a similar tragedy in February where a teacher was killed, and a student sustained injuries in the southern region. Emergency responders reported that trauma victims suffered injuries to their back, chest, and arms, with one female teacher receiving chest and arm wounds.

Despite the best efforts of medics, she succumbed to her injuries. The school, which accommodated approximately 3,100 students and employed 147 teachers for the 2025 academic year, has a history of gun-related incidents in Thailand. The nation has grappled with a surge in gun violence, with children frequently becoming victims. The country's most devastating mass shooting to date occurred in 2022, when a former police officer orchestrated a three-hour gun-and-knife rampage in a northeastern daycare center, resulting in the deaths of 36 people, including 22 young children who were stabbed while sleeping.
