China launches probe into Palo Alto Networks as US trade tensions intensify

Beijing has initiated a cybersecurity investigation into products sold in China by US technology giant Palo Alto Networks, according to the Cyberspace Administration of China. The administration stated the probe aims to ensure the secure operation of critical information infrastructure, prevent cybersecurity risks, and safeguard national security.

Palo Alto Networks, a leading US provider of cybersecurity and cloud computing solutions, caters to numerous clients across various sectors, including finance, technology, and energy. This move follows Beijing's recent sanctions on multiple US companies and tightened controls over the drone supply chain, stemming from earlier US actions perceived as harmful to China's interests.

In a parallel development, the United States recently imposed restrictions on foreign robotic devices and power inverters, impacting sectors where Chinese companies dominate.

Palo Alto Networks has a substantial footprint in China, with offices in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou. Its offerings comprise advanced firewalls, cloud-native security platforms, and global threat intelligence. This is the most recent instance of US tech companies facing regulatory scrutiny in China amid escalating geopolitical tensions.

In 2023, Beijing's internet watchdog launched a cybersecurity review of US memory chip manufacturer Micron Technology, concluding that Micron had failed the review due to severe cybersecurity issues that threatened China's supply chain. As a result, Micron has been barred from selling to operators of critical information infrastructure in China.

Legal experts suggest that if Palo Alto Networks fails the review, it could face a similar ban, potentially affecting its market share in sectors like finance, energy, telecommunications, and transport. While its regular commercial clients in China might not be directly impacted, the firm's equipment could raise security concerns if deployed in telecoms networks.

Xiang Ligang, a veteran telecoms industry professional, stated that such probes are customary for China to conduct on foreign providers operating in sensitive industries, especially following recent actions by the US Federal Communications Commission to review or restrict Chinese products.
