China launches probe into Palo Alto Networks as US trade tensions intensify

China has initiated a cybersecurity investigation into products sold by US technology company Palo Alto Networks in China, according to a statement from the Cyberspace Administration of China on Thursday. The review aims to "ensure the secure and stable operation of critical information infrastructure, prevent cybersecurity risks and vulnerabilities, and safeguard national security."

Palo Alto Networks, a leading US cybersecurity and cloud computing provider, serves tens of thousands of clients across various industries. The move follows Beijing's recent sanctions on several US companies and stricter controls over the drone supply chain, which Beijing claims are in response to earlier US actions that harmed China's interests.

The US has also imposed bans on imports and sales of certain robotic devices and power inverters, sectors where Chinese companies are dominant. China and the US have been in a tense "trade truce" for months, with both sides attempting to avoid a new tariff war while seeking to mitigate supply chain vulnerabilities. Palo Alto Networks has a significant presence in China, operating offices in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou, offering advanced firewalls, cloud-native security platforms, and global threat intelligence.

Should the company fail the review, it could face a ban similar to the one imposed on Micron Technology in 2023, which would impact its market share in China, particularly in sectors like finance, energy, telecommunications, and transport. However, regular commercial clients in China might not be directly affected. Experts suggest that such security probes are standard for foreign providers in sensitive industries in China, as Beijing often reciprocates US actions.
