Australia's Jetstar to charge for carry-on bags in overhead lockers next year

Australia's Jetstar is set to introduce charges for carry-on bags in overhead lockers starting next year. Passengers will still be able to bring one smaller bag, such as a backpack or handbag, free of charge. However, larger bags will incur fees of A$25 to A$52 (US$18 to $37) per flight, depending on the route. This move aligns Jetstar's policy with several low-cost airlines globally that charge passengers for accessing overhead locker space while including a smaller under-seat bag in the base fare.

A "Priority Carry-on" option will be available for those needing larger bags, which includes a bigger overhead locker bag and early boarding access, removing the previous 7-kg (15-pound) weight limit. The airline argues that these charges will help expedite the boarding process. However, the policy has faced criticism from some consumer groups and politicians, with claims it is a "cash grab".

Jetstar CEO Stephanie Tully defended the changes, stating they will improve on-time departure performance and align with the airline's low-fares philosophy. Federal Transport Minister Catherine King called for airlines to clearly disclose additional charges to avoid "surprises" at the airport.
