Three Malaysian women were detained at Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta International Airport on Monday after arriving from Kota Kinabalu, suspected of carrying drugs. According to Hussein Omar Khan, head of the Narcotics Crimes Investigation Department (JSJN) in Bukit Aman, they were informed by Indonesian police about the arrest of three women aged between 30 to 39 years old from Sabah.

It was found that two of them had a prior criminal record related to drugs and were dealers. However, the amount of drugs seized by Indonesian police was small and believed to be for personal use. "The arrest of these three women also found to have no connection with the arrest of a flight attendant and a 22-year-old man in Indonesia earlier," he told Bernama after appearing on Bernama Radio's Waspada program.

Earlier reports claimed airport officials at Terminal 2F managed to thwart the attempt by the three female passengers to bring drugs hidden in their luggage and shoes after arriving on the flight from Kota Kinabalu. Meanwhile, commenting on the series of drug arrests involving Malaysian nationals overseas, Hussein did not deny the geographical location of Malaysia as a factor in making it a transit route for international drug syndicates.

"Most of the drug syndicates operate from countries north of Malaysia and we have become a transit stop before the drugs are brought to Indonesia, Singapore, the Philippines, and several other countries. "In this regard, we will again tighten the standard operating procedure (SOP) already in place at the country's entry and exit points to ensure Malaysia is not continually labeled as a transit country for drugs," he said.

To prove the consistent stance of police in fighting border-related crimes, Hussein revealed that JSJN successfully seized 89 drugs of various types throughout the country last year. He said the momentum of enforcement operations will remain consistent this year with nearly 46 drugs seized in the first six months of the year.
