On August 1, a 22-year-old Malaysian man was detained at the Woodlands Checkpoint in Singapore after being suspected of attempting to smuggle 10kg of drugs. According to Singapore's Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB), the suspicious car was directed to undergo further screening at the checkpoint, during which authorities discovered a package containing two suspected drug packages hidden in the car.

The CNB subsequently found an additional 8.6kg of cannabis and 1.5kg of methamphetamine within the car, according to a report from The Straits Times. The seized drugs are estimated to be worth S$361,000 and have the potential to be used by 2,132 people within a week, the CNB noted. If convicted, the man faces the death penalty. Singapore has mandatory death penalties for drug offenses exceeding certain quantities, set at 500g for cannabis and 250g for methamphetamine.

This latest incident involving a Malaysian national being caught attempting to smuggle drugs across a neighboring country comes just a week after a Malaysian pilot was detained at Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta International Airport for allegedly smuggling 25kg of ecstasy. Additionally, another Malaysian man, aged 22, was detained at Juanda International Airport in Surabaya on the same day for allegedly attempting to smuggle almost 1kg of methamphetamine and over 1,000 ecstasy pills.

Meanwhile, in Thailand, three Malaysians were arrested for allegedly possessing and trafficking 87kg of methamphetamine intended for smuggling into Malaysia, facing sentences of up to 15 years in prison if convicted.
