Indonesian Customs authorities have released CCTV footage showing a Malaysian passenger suspected of attempting to smuggle 25kg ecstasy tablets into Indonesia. The Jakarta-based Directorate General of Customs and Excise (Bea Cukai) posted the video on its Instagram account on Monday, which depicts a 39-year-old man in airport uniform taking a large golden-colored handbag from a conveyor belt while pulling a black bag, before walking through a dedicated crew entrance area towards a Customs examination area.

According to the video narrative, the suspect entered a designated crew lounge before being directed to a further Customs examination room after being identified through a risk profiling process. The footage then shifted to the bag examination process, where Customs officers opened the golden bag and removed clothing and other items, discovering several baggies of a reddish substance hidden in the bottom, while the suspect was questioned during the examination.

The video ends with the officer showing a small bottle of liquid, believed to be fake urine, claimed to have been used to manipulate the urinalysis test. Indonesian authorities announced the Malaysian passenger was detained on July 29 for attempting to bring the 25kg drug worth around 60 billion Indonesian rupias (RM225.20 per 1 IDR) into the country.

Authorities also accused the passenger of testing positive for MDMA, methamphetamine and cocaine, having previously smuggled drugs into Indonesia and abusing the VIP crew bag control system by hiding the drugs under his clothing in a bag with a crew bag tag. Initial investigations also revealed the suspect was offered a $50,000 bribe to carry out the smuggling operation, while authorities continue to hunt down the alleged ringleader of the syndicate.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian Embassy in Jakarta has confirmed they have been given consular access to the Malaysian national and have contacted his family. Separately, Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) reiterated its commitment to supporting various agencies in protecting Malaysia's borders from criminal activities, while expressing readiness to provide any necessary assistance related to the case and maintaining close cooperation with government agencies.
