US: 25 states sue over Trump's new tariffs

Twenty-five US states initiated legal proceedings against President Donald Trump's administration on Monday, alleging that the administration's recent tariffs were a means to replace import taxes invalidated by the Supreme Court in February. The United States recently imposed double-digit tariffs on 59 countries, including the European Union, citing inadequate efforts to combat labor exploitation in imported goods.

The new tariffs became effective as the temporary tariffs imposed by Trump after the Supreme Court ruling neared their expiration date.

New York Attorney General Letitia James and Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield spearheaded the lawsuit, accusing the administration of attempting to impose additional taxes on families and businesses following its Supreme Court losses. The coalition of Democratic-led and Republican-led states argued that there is no logical connection between the alleged issue of forced labor in global supply chains and the imposition of blanket global tariffs.

The lawsuit, filed in court, contended that the tariff action was arbitrary, capricious, and unlawful. The White House responded by asserting that the government's move was legal, stating that the United States is exercising its lawful authority to eliminate unreasonable acts, policies, and practices that negatively impact US commerce, including American workers.
