Ukraine appears to strike Russian supermarket warehouse for first time

On August 4, the Ukrainian military reportedly carried out its first known attack on a Russian supermarket warehouse. The target was a Lenta distribution center, situated in Leningrad Oblast, which is controlled by billionaire Alexey Mordashov. The attack involved drones, resulting in a significant fire that lasted approximately four hours to be extinguished. One employee at the site sustained burns and required hospitalization.

Lenta, a major supermarket chain in Russia with over 7,000 stores, temporarily halted delivery operations from suppliers following the incident. Astra later identified the injured employee as a forklift operator. The company is now assessing the damage and working to resume operations at the distribution center as quickly as possible.

Russian propaganda channels confirmed the attack, reporting that a drone had fallen on the grounds of the Lenta hub. The strike prompted the company to appeal to the Kremlin, seeking assistance in restructuring their logistics systems to mitigate the risk of future supply disruptions. They proposed retaining more inventory with suppliers and collecting goods on-demand rather than relying on large, centralized hubs.

However, analyst Mikhail Burmistrov cautioned that this approach could lead to increased costs and higher wholesale prices for consumers.

Separately, Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces had previously targeted 18 warehouses belonging to the Russian online retailer Wildberries over the past 18 days. An attack on a Wildberries warehouse in Berdyansk, Zaporizhzhya Oblast, was also reported on August 4. Fires were also recorded in the Russian city of Syzran, with local authorities claiming that five people were killed in Chekhov near Moscow.

The Ukrainian military had initiated attacks on Wildberries logistics centers since July 18, damaging a substantial portion of the retailer's logistics infrastructure.
