DMK MLA Markandeyan released on bail over remarks against CM Vijay

DMK lawmaker G V Markandeyan was released on bail on Tuesday after being arrested on July 20 over remarks he made against Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay. Markandeyan accused the state government of adopting an authoritarian approach and aiming to undermine democratic rights. He noted that former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi was jailed during anti-Hindi protests to safeguard Tamil unity, and the current leader had spent a year in prison during farmer rights demonstrations.

Markandeyan told reporters that the party is prepared to endure a thousand prisons if necessary, rather than have its views suppressed. He drew parallels between past struggles and the current situation, invoking leaders who endured imprisonment. The arrest stemmed from a complaint alleging that Markandeyan made defamatory and threatening statements during a DMK meeting, including a remark that DMK legislators would break the bones of the Chief Minister inside the Legislative Assembly.

The Madras High Court granted Markandeyan conditional bail on August 3, and he was released from prison on Tuesday. Markandeyan attributed his situation to historical struggles, comparing himself to prominent leaders who faced imprisonment. He contrasted the previous administration with the current one, praising M K Stalin's governance and criticizing the recent three months of rule under the present administration.

Markandeyan clarified that the controversial remarks leading to his arrest were part of a local dialect and that the Chief Minister needs to mature and speak more maturely. Regarding his bail conditions, Markandeyan had not fully read the order but mentioned an instruction to refrain from excessively criticizing the Chief Minister.

He also clarified that he is exempt from signing the police register on days he attends legislative assembly sessions. Despite government attempts to intimidate him, Markandeyan affirmed that DMK cadres will actively fulfill their democratic duties in the upcoming assembly session.
