AIADMK chief Edappadi Palaniswami condemns Udhayanidhi Stalin’s arrest

On Tuesday, August 4, 2026, the AIADMK chief Edappadi Palaniswami called for the withdrawal of arrest proceedings against DMK leader and Assembly Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin, in the lead-up to the Assembly session slated to begin on August 5. Palaniswami argued that the post of the Leader of the Opposition is a crucial position in the Assembly and it was unacceptable that this government would proceed with the session without the individual holding that role.

Speaking via a social media post, Palaniswami remarked: “We have been saying for several years that Mr. Udhayanidhi should mind what he speaks. It is condemnable that he made derogatory comments against women without realizing the position he holds.” He further noted that while a case could potentially be initiated against him for his comments, the arrest of the Leader of the Opposition the day prior to the Assembly session raised suspicions of a potential political motive behind the case.
