Man smashes five bank machines after failed ATM withdrawal in Sarikei, injures one person

At around 12.05am yesterday, Sarikei district police discovered a man had wreaked havoc at five bank machines in the area. The 38-year-old suspect, fueled by anger over a failed ATM withdrawal and under the influence of drugs, allegedly injured a 21-year-old bystander with a machete. Police Chief Supt Aswandy Anis stated that the suspect damaged two ATM machines, two cash deposit machines, and one cheque deposit machine at a local bank.

After the assault, the suspect fled in a Toyota Hilux, which crashed into a divider on Jalan Masjid Lama. A nearby 21-year-old man suffered severe injuries to his left hand and was taken to Sarikei Hospital. The suspect surrendered at the police station and was found to be under the influence of ketamine and benzodiazepine. Police seized the vehicle and a machete believed to have been used in the incident.

The case is being investigated under multiple sections of the Penal Code, Road Transport Act, and Dangerous Drugs Act.
