Ghana Premier League is not fit for purpose – Hearts of Oak chief Sowah Odotei

Hearts of Oak's Interim Management Committee (IMC) Lead Administrator, Vincent Sowah Odotei, has slammed the Ghana Premier League for its lack of entertainment, which he believes is the cause of dwindling matchday attendance. The country's top tier league has long battled with poor turnout, impacting club finances. Speaking to Joy Sports, Odotei stated that supporters are avoiding games due to a lack of excitement and entertainment in the league.

"Our football is not fit for purpose. Our football is not entertaining. Football is a drama. You need actors; you need stars that people will want to come and watch," he asserted. Odotei pointed to former Hearts of Oak players such as Shamo Quaye and Ablade Kumah as examples of footballers who drew crowds to stadiums due to their popularity.

He also mentioned Stephen Appiah and Anas Seidu, emphasizing the significance of players having strong ties with their communities to foster fan support. "People came to watch Hearts of Oak because of Shamo Quaye and Ablade Kumah. They came from Tema, their community. You go to Newtown, Anas Seidu. You go to Mamprobi, Stephen Appiah and co. That’s where they come from," Odotei explained.

With Matchday Nine fixtures already concluded, clubs are now focusing on Matchday 10, set to be played across various venues nationwide this weekend.
