DayOne and Blue Whale Energy partner on virtual power plant

Data centre operator DayOne partnered with Blue Whale Energy to deploy coordinated battery storage systems at its SG1 facility establishing virtual power plant capabilities in Singapore

Singapore-based digital infrastructure provider DayOne Data Centers and battery energy storage specialist Blue Whale Energy have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding to research the potential of a Distributed Virtual Power Plant (VPP) in the country. This collaboration aims to investigate an intelligent real-time solution for coordinating a network of distributed battery storage systems (BESS) that would connect DayOne's upcoming SG1 data center with various commercial and industrial locations.

By pooling battery storage across multiple sites, the Distributed VPP would enable flexible grid resource management, particularly during peak electricity demand periods. The proposed initiative could optimize existing power infrastructure, unlock new capacity, and help avoid costly grid upgrades. Jamie Khoo, DayOne's CEO, emphasized that data centers should actively contribute to strengthening the power ecosystem and creating long-term value.

Gabriel Lim, Blue Whale Energy's founder and CEO, added that the partnership will evaluate the technical, operational, and commercial aspects required for a Distributed VPP, starting with the Singapore market. The initial phases of the project will involve a joint front-end engineering design study covering storage configuration, safety, metering and telemetry, controls, operational safeguards, and arrangements with participating commercial and industrial facilities.

Both companies also plan to engage relevant authorities and market stakeholders to understand the necessary technical and market participation requirements. Additionally, they will explore the potential for participation in Singapore's Demand Response and Interruptible Load programs, which encourage businesses to reduce electricity consumption during market stress and grid contingencies to ensure power system reliability.
