Can Alcaraz's ex-coach help Shelton challenge his former protege?
US Open runner-up Ben Shelton joins forces with Juan Carlos Ferrer, the former coach of Carlos Alcaraz - BBC Sport analyses why the partnership suits both parties.
Juan Carlos Ferrero's ex-coach, Ben Shelton, might soon be working together to help another player challenge the Spaniard's dominance. The former world number one Ferrero nurtured Alcaraz from a young age, turning him into a seven-time Grand Slam champion. Now, at 24, Shelton possesses explosive power and supreme athleticism, but he has struggled to consistently execute his damaging forehand against top players.
Ferrero, known for his strategic thinking and tactical prowess, sees opportunities for both players. While Alcaraz already has the makings of a champion, Shelton's raw talent and will to win could be refined under Ferrero's guidance. However, the question remains whether Ferrero can successfully coach someone other than his former protege.
