China's secretive space plane is flying over the US this week — here's how to see it for yourself
Early risers across the U.S. could catch a glimpse of China's mysterious Shenlong spacecraft with the naked eye.
China's secretive space plane, Shenlong, is set to make several passes over the United States in the coming days, potentially visible to the naked eye with favorable conditions. The spacecraft, currently in its fourth mission, is reportedly testing technologies that could lead to more affordable and convenient round-trip methods for peaceful space exploration.
To view Shenlong, skywatchers across major U.S. cities such as New York, Chicago, Denver, and Los Angeles have several high-altitude pass opportunities between October 30 and early November, depending on local predawn skies. The spacecraft's maximum elevation, which determines its visibility, ranges from 48° to 85° above the horizon.
To locate Shenlong, visit Heavens-Above, input your location, and search for "PRC TEST SPACECRAFT 4" in the satellite database. The spacecraft resembles a small, steadily moving point of light akin to a satellite gliding across the sky, with brightness varying between magnitude +2.5 and +6 under optimal conditions.
